Common myths about GLP-1 weight-loss drugs

GLP-1 medicines are everywhere right now. About 1 in 8 U.S. adults are taking one, for weight loss or for a condition like diabetes.4KFFSourceKFF. Poll: 1 in 8 Adults Say They Are Currently Taking a GLP-1 Drug for Weight Loss, Diabetes or Another Condition. November 2025.Open the source All sources
With that much buzz comes a lot of myths. Some make GLP-1s sound like a magic fix, and others make them sound like cheating.
Here are the ones we hear most, and what's actually true, so you can decide whether a GLP-1 is worth exploring.
01Willpower
Is taking a GLP-1 the easy way out?

No. Obesity is a chronic disease that affects more than 4 in 10 U.S. adults, and the American Medical Association has recognized it as one since 2013.2National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney DiseasesSourceNIDDK. Most people already sense that willpower isn't the whole story. In one national survey, about two-thirds of Americans said willpower alone usually isn't enough to lose weight and keep it off.6Pew Research CenterSourcePew Research Center. Your body also pushes back when you lose weight. It tends to burn a little less energy and make you hungrier.8Endocrine SocietySourceEndocrine Society. Endocrine Society issues Scientific Statement on obesity's causes. June 26, 2017.Open the source All sources That's part of why dieting alone is so hard to keep up.
A GLP-1 works with those signals. It acts like a natural hormone that helps control appetite, so you feel full sooner and stay satisfied longer.1U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy®, Zepbound®, Foundayo™, Ozempic® and Mounjaro®: Indications and Usage; Dosage and Administration; Mechanism of Action. All sources
The medicine quiets the hunger, and the healthy habits are still yours. That's why GLP-1s are approved alongside a reduced-calorie diet and more physical activity.1U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy®, Zepbound®, Foundayo™, Ozempic® and Mounjaro®: Indications and Usage; Dosage and Administration; Mechanism of Action. All sources
In short: A GLP-1 is a treatment, not a shortcut. It turns down the hunger, and you do the rest.
02How long
Do you have to take a GLP-1 forever?
Not necessarily, but it's usually a long-term treatment. GLP-1s work while you take them, much like medicine for high blood pressure.9Cleveland ClinicSourceCleveland Clinic. How Long Should You Be on a GLP-1? May 1, 2026.Open the source All sources

It's rarely all or nothing, though. In one study, people who stopped were still lighter on average a year later than when they started.10Diabetes, Obesity and MetabolismRandomized trial · 2022STEP 1 extensionA year after stopping semaglutide, people had regained about two-thirds of the weight they lost, and were still 5.6% lighter on average than when they started.327 people · 120 weeks. Long-term doesn't have to mean the same dose forever, either. Some people move to a lower dose to maintain, and in a recent study, that kept much of the weight off.11The LancetRandomized trial · 2026SURMOUNT-MAINTAINA year after stepping down to 5 mg, people had kept about two-thirds of the weight they lost, against about two-fifths of those switched to placebo.378 people · 112 weeks: 60 weeks of weight loss, then 52 of maintenance. How long you stay on one is your call, made with your clinician, based on how you're doing and what you want.
03Who it's for
Are GLP-1s only for people with diabetes?
No. Some GLP-1s are approved for type 2 diabetes, and others are approved for weight.
Wegovy®, Zepbound® and Foundayo™ are approved for weight loss. They help adults with obesity, or overweight plus a weight-related health condition, lose weight and keep it off.1U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy®, Zepbound®, Foundayo™, Ozempic® and Mounjaro®: Indications and Usage; Dosage and Administration; Mechanism of Action. All sources
Ozempic® and Mounjaro® are the diabetes medicines. Ozempic® contains semaglutide, like Wegovy®, and Mounjaro® contains tirzepatide, like Zepbound®. Both are approved for type 2 diabetes rather than weight loss.1U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy®, Zepbound®, Foundayo™, Ozempic® and Mounjaro®: Indications and Usage; Dosage and Administration; Mechanism of Action. All sources
That's why "Ozempic" gets used as a nickname for all of them, even though Wegovy® is the semaglutide approved for weight loss.
You don't need a huge amount of weight to lose, either. Clinicians usually look for a BMI of 30 or more. A BMI of 27 or more can qualify too, with a condition like high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.2National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney DiseasesSourceNIDDK. Prescription Medications to Treat Overweight & Obesity. Last reviewed June 2024.Open the source All sources
GLP-1s aren't right for everyone, so a licensed clinician reviews your health history to decide whether one fits.
04The options
Are all GLP-1s the same?
They're more like cousins than twins. They work on the same hunger signals, but they differ in what they're approved for and how you take them.1U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy®, Zepbound®, Foundayo™, Ozempic® and Mounjaro®: Indications and Usage; Dosage and Administration; Mechanism of Action. All sources

05Results
Does a GLP-1 work the same for everyone?
No, and that's completely normal. Everyone's body responds a little differently.
In the large studies, everyone also got diet and activity coaching. On Wegovy®, people lost about 15% of their body weight on average over 68 weeks.13The New England Journal of MedicineRandomized trial · 2021STEP 1Mean body weight fell 14.9 percent on semaglutide against 2.4 percent on placebo over 68 weeks.1,961 people · 68 weeks. 06Food and fitness
Can you eat whatever you want on a GLP-1?

07Cost
Do GLP-1s really cost over $1,000 a month?

Insurance coverage varies by plan. Many online programs are cash-pay, so you don't need insurance to start, and some can check your coverage for you.
08Getting started
Can you get a GLP-1 online?
Yes. About 1 in 6 people who have taken a GLP-1 got it from an online provider.4KFFSourceKFF. Poll: 1 in 8 Adults Say They Are Currently Taking a GLP-1 Drug for Weight Loss, Diabetes or Another Condition. November 2025.Open the source All sources
It's simpler than you might think. You answer some health questions, and a clinician licensed in your state reviews them.
If a GLP-1 is a good fit, your prescription goes to a pharmacy and your medicine ships to you.
Look for a program with a real clinician you can reach with questions, a licensed U.S. pharmacy, and clear pricing before you sign up.
We look at all of this when we rank programs, so you can start with a shortlist.
Frequently asked questions.
Are GLP-1s brand new?

Doctors have prescribed GLP-1 medicines since 2005, first for type 2 diabetes, and they've been approved for weight loss since 2014.

What is "Ozempic face"?
It's a nickname, not a medical term.
It describes how a face can look thinner after fast weight loss, from any cause.
It isn't a side effect of the medicine itself.
