How GLP-1 medicationssupport weight loss.
01What they are
What areGLP-1 medications?
GLP-1 receptor agonists mimic a hormone your body already makes. Semaglutide acts on the GLP-1 receptor alone; tirzepatide acts on GLP-1 and GIP receptors together. Both come as FDA-approved brands and as compounded versions from state-licensed pharmacies, typically at a lower monthly cost.
The 2024 to 2025 shortages are now resolved; compounded versions remain available through state-licensed (503A) pharmacies, prepared for an individual patient with a medical need the standard product doesn't meet.
Reduces appetite and slows how fast the stomach empties
Wegovy® and Zepbound® are FDA-approved for chronic weight management
Compounded versions are not FDA-approved, and trial results don't carry over to them
02The evidence
What do thestudies show?
In large clinical trials paired with lifestyle changes, Wegovy® (semaglutide) led to about 15% average weight loss over 68 weeks, and Zepbound® (tirzepatide) about 15% to 21% over 72 weeks, depending on the dose. These are averages, not guarantees, and weight regain is common after stopping treatment.

About 15% to 21% on Zepbound® over 72 weeks, by dose

Wegovy® and Zepbound® are FDA-approved for chronic weight management and have been extensively studied for safety and efficacy.
The most common side effects are nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation, which usually ease over time.
They carry an FDA boxed warning for a risk of thyroid C-cell tumors, based on animal studies, and should not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or MEN2, or during pregnancy.
Other warnings include pancreatitis and gallbladder problems, and a higher risk of low blood sugar when combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea.
This is a high-level summary, not a complete list.
Compounded versions have not been reviewed by the FDA.
A licensed clinician should decide whether treatment is right for you.
How much weight can I expect to lose with GLP-1 treatment?
In clinical trials paired with lifestyle changes, Wegovy® (semaglutide) led to about 15% average weight loss over 68 weeks, and Zepbound® (tirzepatide) about 15% to 21% over 72 weeks, depending on the dose.
These are averages, not guarantees.
Individual results vary based on factors like starting weight, adherence to treatment, diet, exercise, and overall health.
Which leads to more weight loss, tirzepatide or semaglutide?
In a head-to-head study of adults with obesity (without type 2 diabetes), people on tirzepatide (Zepbound®) lost more on average, about 20% of their body weight, than those on semaglutide (Wegovy®), at about 14%, over 72 weeks.
Semaglutide is still very effective and widely used, and one of the top choices.
Tirzepatide is also sold as Mounjaro®, and semaglutide as Ozempic®, both approved for type 2 diabetes.
Does insurance cover GLP-1 medications for weight loss?
Sometimes, for brand-name medication, and usually only after a prior authorization that checks your body mass index and related conditions.
Compounded medication is almost never covered.
Several of the programs above will check your coverage before you pay for a consult.
How do I choose between different GLP-1 providers?
Compare what the monthly price includes, whether the medication is brand-name or compounded, how quickly a licensed clinician reviews your intake, what support you get between refills, and the cancellation terms.
The highlights on each card above cover those points.
What is the difference between telemedicine and in-person GLP-1 treatment?
Telehealth programs review your health history online, often within a day, and ship the medication to your door, usually at a lower cash price.
An in-person clinic can examine you and run labs on site, which some patients prefer.
Both can be effective when provided by qualified healthcare professionals.
How long do I need to take GLP-1 medications?
GLP-1 medications are typically prescribed as long-term treatments.
Weight regain is common after stopping treatment, so there is no set minimum.
How long you stay on treatment is a decision to make with your clinician.
