For years, a GLP-1 for weight loss meant a weekly shot. Now there are pills too.
That's good news if needles aren't your thing. In a 2023 national poll, 44% of adults said they'd be interested in a weight-loss pill, against 23% for a routine injection.2KFFSourceKFF. Here's how the pills and the shots compare, so you can decide which fits your life.

04Day to day
What's it like to take a pill vs. a shot?

The biggest difference is the routine.
The Wegovy® pill is a morning ritual. You take it on an empty stomach with a little plain water, up to half a cup. Then you wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking or taking other pills.1U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Foundayo™, Zepbound®, and Rybelsus® and Ozempic® tablets: Indications and Usage; Dosage and Administration; Drug Interactions; Clinical Studies; How Supplied, Storage and Handling. All sources
Food and other drinks get in the way of how the tablet is absorbed, so the wait matters.1U.S. All sources
Foundayo™ is simpler: one tablet a day, with or without food.1U.S. All sources
The shots are once a week, usually with a prefilled pen. You pick a day that suits you.
With every option, you start on a low dose and step up about once a month, which gives your body time to adjust.1U.S. All sources
Early on, some people notice an upset stomach, with pills and shots alike. It usually settles, and your clinician can slow things down if it doesn't.
A few habits make either one easy:
Make the pill your first thing
Keep the Wegovy® pill by your bed and take it when you wake. Shower and get dressed while you wait, then it's time for coffee and breakfast.1U.S. All sources
Pick a shot day
Choose a day of the week for your shot and set a reminder on your phone.
Store it right
Pills stay at room temperature in their bottle. Pens live in the fridge, and can stay out for a few weeks if you travel.1U.S. All sources
Bring your medicine list
Some medicines need a timing or dose check, like a thyroid pill, so your clinician will see how yours fit.1U.S. All sources
Have a backup for birth control
If you take birth control pills, Foundayo™ and Zepbound® call for a backup method. Use one for a month after you start and after each dose increase.1U.S. All sources

- Ozempic® (semaglutide) is a prescription-only injectable medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It is not FDA-approved for weight loss; however, weight reduction has been observed in some individuals with type 2 diabetes using the medication.

Important safety information
- Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are prepared by state-licensed pharmacies and are not FDA approved. The FDA does not review their safety, effectiveness or quality, and clinical trial results for brand-name drugs do not carry over to them.
- Semaglutide and tirzepatide carry a boxed warning for a risk of thyroid C-cell tumors, based on animal studies, and are not for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or MEN2, or who is pregnant. Other warnings include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and a higher risk of low blood sugar when combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea. The most common side effects are digestive, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation.
- This is a high-level summary, not a complete list. A licensed clinician will review your health history to decide whether a GLP-1 medication is right for you.
