If you're starting a GLP-1, you've probably heard about the side effects. Maybe a friend mentioned feeling queasy, or you've seen someone online talking about "sulfur burps".

Here's the reassuring part. The common ones are mostly tummy troubles. They're usually mild, and they tend to ease as your body gets used to the medicine.U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® and Foundayo™: Dosage and Administration; Adverse Reactions; Clinical Pharmacology; Patient Counseling Information; Medication Guides. All sourcesThe American Journal of Clinical NutritionSourceMozaffarian D, Agarwal M, Aggarwal M, et al. Here's what to expect, and the simple habits that help you feel your best.

01What's normal

What are the most common GLP-1 side effects?

A smiling man in a gray T-shirt with his hands resting on his stomach

Most are stomach-related. Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting and constipation top the list.U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® and Foundayo™: Dosage and Administration; Adverse Reactions; Clinical Pharmacology; Patient Counseling Information; Medication Guides. All sources

Some people also notice stomach pain, indigestion, burping, heartburn, gas or bloating.U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® and Foundayo™: Dosage and Administration; Adverse Reactions; Clinical Pharmacology; Patient Counseling Information; Medication Guides. All sources

They're usually mild to moderate, and not everyone gets them. In the main studies, more than half of people never had nausea at all.U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® and Foundayo™: Dosage and Administration; Adverse Reactions; Clinical Pharmacology; Patient Counseling Information; Medication Guides. All sources

And most people keep going. 02Why it happens

Why do GLP-1s upset your stomach?

GLP-1s slow down how fast your stomach empties, and they quiet the hunger signals in your brain. That's a big part of how they help you eat less.U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® and Foundayo™: Dosage and Administration; Adverse Reactions; Clinical Pharmacology; Patient Counseling Information; Medication Guides. All sources

03Timing

When do side effects start, and how long do they last?

They're most likely in your first weeks and each time your dose goes up. After that, they tend to come less often.U.S. Food and Drug AdministrationSourceFDA prescribing information for Wegovy® (injection and tablets), Zepbound® and Foundayo™: Dosage and Administration; Adverse Reactions; Clinical Pharmacology; Patient Counseling Information; Medication Guides. All sourcesThe American Journal of Clinical NutritionSourceMozaffarian D, Agarwal M, Aggarwal M, et al. 3. Your long-term dose

Important safety information

  • Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are prepared by state-licensed pharmacies and are not FDA approved. The FDA does not review their safety, effectiveness or quality, and clinical trial results for brand-name drugs do not carry over to them.
  • Semaglutide and tirzepatide carry a boxed warning for a risk of thyroid C-cell tumors, based on animal studies, and are not for anyone with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or MEN2, or who is pregnant. Other warnings include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and a higher risk of low blood sugar when combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea. The most common side effects are digestive, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation.
